Intentional Holidays: Smart Giving in Tough Times

As the year rushes to a close and we glance toward 2026, I’m reminded that balance in career, in giving, in all things, isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a lifeline.

If you’re anything like me, you want to give generously this season. But you also want to start the new year with your financial goals intact, your spirit strong, and your values leading the way.

It’s easy in December to slip back into old habits: overspending, picking up “just one more thing,” letting strategies and intentions go out the window. But I’m challenging myself—and you—to think differently about giving this year.

Here’s how I’m redefining gift-giving at home, in the office, and across my community, so that the spirit of the holiday doesn’t vanish in the checkout line.

  1. See Your People

The best gift starts with actually seeing the folks in front of you. What lights up your loved ones? Listen for what they truly need—not just what’s on sale or what you imagine they “should” want. Sometimes, all they crave is togetherness: a meal, a shared laugh, time that’s truly spent. You don’t have to cook everything. Let it be a potluck. There are plenty of meaningful, affordable ways to build connections.

2. Command Your Budget. Don’t Let It Command You.

Financial discipline isn’t just for investors or business owners; it’s an act of real self-respect. I set a holiday budget and stick to it. Living a Sovereign Life® means choosing freedom over fleeting pressures. The best gift we can give our families is stability, not more stuff. Sometimes, “enough” really is enough.

3. Get Creative—Not Just Consumerist

We can bring more magic into this season by breaking out of the “new = better” trap. Some of my favorite gifts (to give or receive) have been handmade, thrifted, or even “re-gifted” with love.

That beautiful, never-worn scarf in your closet? Wrap it up for someone who’ll treasure it. Facebook Marketplace, your local Buy Nothing group, or even neighborhood swaps are full of gems—often pre-assembled, saving both time and money. (Full disclosure: I have a growing mountain of kids’ bikes and Barbie houses headed that way soon!)

4. Reimagine What Giving Means

This year, try giving experiences. An outing, a class, an afternoon together; these stay in the memory long after things wear out. Or give back: donate to a cause that’s close to your family’s heart, and invite your kids to join so they see what community really is. Even your time can be an incredible gift. Have a home project you can finally tackle? Paint your child’s room or help build something together. It’s these shared moments that become family legend.

5. Family Vision: Make It Real

If you tried my idea from earlier this year about making a family vision board and goal setting, now is the time to pull that out and see what you’ve achieved. Consider that one of the family vision items or experiences could make a perfect new meaning for gifting at Christmas, all while staying true to the rewards system for putting the goal-setting into action.

This kind of intentional gifting grounds us, protects our wallets, and keeps us focused on what’s real. That’s my wish for you: gifts that bring lasting joy, a budget that honors your values, and the luxury of time spent with people and communities you love.

Let’s choose intention over impulse. Let’s keep building lives, businesses, and traditions that last—on our terms, and in true Sovereign style.

How are you making the season more meaningful this year? Share your ideas and traditions below—I’d love to hear!

Wishing you abundance and joy, your way.
