Coretta Scott King’s legacy in Atlanta has always felt like a guide for building with purpose. As a fellow member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, I feel a deep, personal connection to her mission. Having worked closely with the Historic District Development Corporation (HDDC), the organization she co-founded to protect Atlanta’s rich Black history, I’m constantly reminded of the bar she set for service, stewardship, and community transformation.
What I love most about her leadership is that she saw development as something deeper than just buildings; she saw it as protecting people and culture. She proved that we can move a community forward without erasing the people who built the foundation. The Old Fourth Ward is what it is today because she insisted on that balance.
That mission is alive and well today. Under the leadership of Cheneé Joseph, HDDC is continuing to lead the charge for equitable growth in Sweet Auburn. Seeing the progress of the Front Porch project, which brings together affordable housing, space for Black-owned businesses, and even urban gardens, is a beautiful example of how Mrs. King’s vision has evolved to meet our modern needs. It’s proof that we don’t have to choose between progress and preservation.
Her influence in philanthropy carried that same weight. Through her work with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, she pushed for strategies that actually strengthened families. That’s the heartbeat of sustainable development. It’s the same belief that guides my work: when families thrive, neighborhoods thrive and that’s how cities shift.
Most of all, I’m inspired by her spirit. Graceful. Strategic. Steady. She believed in “what could be” long before the world caught up. I lean on that quiet courage often, especially when the work feels heavy or the path feels long.
This Black History Month, I’m reminded that our progress sits on the shoulders of women like Coretta Scott King and is carried forward by the women leading today. Her legacy calls us to keep imagining, keep building, and always choose intention over speed. I carry her example with pride, knowing the work continues.
Be inspired and #LiveSovereign!
